<image:caption>Image text: A Brief History of Self-Managed Abortion Care (SMA). In the 1980s, Brazilian women shared information with each other about Cytotec (Misoprostol), an ulcer medication that induces uterine contractions in pregnant women. This led to a decline in maternal mortality rates. However, the Brazilian government eventually restricted access to this medication. In 2008, Ecuadorian feminists launched the first abortion hotline (which is still in operation today). This helped to spread information on safe medication-based abortions worldwide, reducing global maternal mortality rates. More recently, US activists have been organizing both online and offline to help pregnant individuals seeking abortions—even in states where abortion is heavily criminalized.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Image text: History of Self-Managed Trans Care. In the 1940s, synthetic hormones were introduced to treat certain medical conditions. Some trans people—especially those from middle-class US households—were able to obtain and use these medications for DIY transition. In the 50s and early 60s, some doctors began using the diagnostic label of transsexuality to provide gender-affirming care to trans patients. However, the diagnostic criteria were very restrictive, so that the vast majority of trans people did not have access to these services. In the 60s and 70s, an underground hormones market developed along the West Coast, making DIY transition more accessible to marginalized trans folks. Some trans women also learned how to perform orchiechtomies on themselves, either from a textbook or a sympathetic doctor. Today, information about DIY trans healthcare is often shared via online communities and websites.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Slide 2 text: Some terms and definitions. Labor is the physical, mental, and emotional work we do to provide valuable resources, services, and experiences that people want and need. Labor can be paid or unpaid. Caring for people's emotional needs and helping them feel good is a form of labor! Class struggle is the ongoing conflict between: The poor and working classes who want the labor they do to benefit themselves and their families/communities, versus the owning classes, who profit from exploiting other people’s labor and natural resources. Poor and working-class people have to sell their labor or do unpaid labor in exchange for resources they need to survive. Owning-class people do not have to sell their labor because they own property (businesses, real estate, etc.) that generates enough profit for them to live on.</image:caption>

<image:title>Ho-Op Blog - Thotty Thursday: Class Struggle and Sex Work</image:title>
<image:caption>Slide 3 text: The working classes include (but aren't limited to): Salaried workers in high-status professions. Most “middle-class” people are just highly-privileged working-class people—they still have to sell their labor to survive! Manual laborers and service workers earning an hourly wage. Self-employed people and gig workers including many online sex workers. Unpaid domestic laborers such as stay-at-home partners/ parents in working-class households. Disabled workers in sheltered workshops who can legally be paid less than minimum wage in some places. Underground economy workers whose labor is criminalized or seen as illegitimate (such as street sex work in the U.S.). BIPOC and queer/trans/disabled folks often end up in this class due to discrimination and/or accessIbIlity barriers in mainstream jobs. Prison laborers who constitute a modern-day slave class. The 13th amendment of the U.S. Constitution allows slavery as punishment for a crime! The prison labor system gives the majority-white owning classes a legal way to coercively extract labor from incarcerated—and disproportionately Black and Brown—people. All workers are exploited under capitalism—but some are more exploited, marginalized, and stigmatized than others.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Slide 4 text: Sex work and class. Quote from Lorelei Lee: “[Anti-sex-work feminists] cultivate a world in which sex-working women are culturally, legally, and visibly separated from women who do not trade sex.” End quote. Sex-work-related class divides include (but aren't limited to): Sex workers versus non-sex workers. In-person versus virtual-only sex workers. Criminalized versus non-criminalized sex workers. Outdoor versus indoor sex workers. Queer/trans versus straight/cis sex workers. BIPOC versus white sex workers. Disabled versus non-disabled sex workers. Sex workers who use drugs versus those who do not. Sex workers who live with HIV versus those who do not. Homeless/unstably-housed versus stably-housed sex workers. These factors can impact a sex worker's social status; income level; safety in the workplace, at home, and in public spaces; access to housing, healthcare, and education; and overall quality of life.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Slide 5 text: Whorearchy. Whorearchy is an arbitrary social class hierarchy that reinforces oppression by valuing some types of sex work/ers as more “respectable” than others. Whorearchy attempts to rank different kinds of sex work/ers according to: If the worker/service is criminalized. Example: Strippers are ranked above full-service sex workers. The imagined social class of the worker. Exxample: An “elite” escort is ranked above a high-volume full-service worker. The imagined social class of the worker's clientele. Example: A “sugar baby” is ranked above a “street walker.” The kinds of services the work/er provides. Examples: Camming is ranked above lap dances. Sexual domination work is ranked above sexual service work. No-contact/no-nudity is ranked above nudity/explicit content which is ranked above full service.</image:caption>

<image:title>Ho-Op Blog - Thotty Thursday: Class Struggle and Sex Work</image:title>
<image:caption>Slide 6 text: Whorearchy is premised on distorted assumptions about how the sex industry works: 1. Many workers shift between sectors and rate structures according to personal preference, lifestyle fit, and market opportunity—there’s no inherent “superiority” of any form of sex work or worker! 2. Many sex workers perform “class drag” as part of their branding/marketing, however, these curated personas do not necessarily reflect a worker’s earnings, industry reputation, or social class! Whorearchy reinforces capitalist and patriarchal myths which dehumanize all sex workers: The myth that feminized labor (sexual, service, caretaking) is less valuable or dignified. The myth that sexual expression is shameful or immoral. The myth that a person’s worth is tied to their labor/social class. The myth that “respectability” / distancing ourselves from other whores will protect us from the harms of criminalization, violence, and stigma.</image:caption>

<image:title>Ho-Op Blog - Thotty Thursday: Class Struggle and Sex Work</image:title>
<image:caption>Slide 7 text: A Brief (Sexual) Labor History. All sex is labor—it involves using physical, mental, and emotional energy to produce something of value (physical pleasure, emotional connection, biological children, etc.). Historical records show there have always been people exchanging sexual labor for what they want and/or need. The rise of class-divided economies robbed many people of power to negotiate the terms under which they would and would not perform labor—including sexual labor. Stigmatizing and excluding sex work from the formal economy is one way the owning class strives to control reproduction and sexuality in order to hoard wealth and enforce social divisions between classes. For thousands of years, sex workers have been engaging in class struggle by finding creative ways to take back their power over their own bodies and labor. Eventually, colonialism and capitalism introduced new racialized and gendered dynamics into class struggle.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Slide 8 text: A Brief (Sexual) Labor History. When owning-class Europeans began to colonize the African and American continents, they claimed that the people indigenous to those lands were “uncivilized” in order to justify exploiting them for profit—by enslaving them, forcing them to work for low pay, or committing genocide so their land would be free for the taking. White slave owners claimed Black women were hyper-sexual, and weaponized sexual violence against them to reproduce the slave class. (Black women did not accept this passively—they found ways to fight back!) Monogamous heterosexual marriage and strict binary gender norms became standards of “civilized” European/ white culture—while gender and sexual diversity in Black and Indigenous communities proved they were “uncivilized.” Industrial capitalism changed cultural expectations around labor and gender for working-class women: Instead of doing farming and household labor alongside their wives, more men began working for wages outside the home leaving their wives responsible for housework and childcare. The full-time wife and mother became an idealized image of “civilized” white womanhood ... while women of color were often hired to do low-paid domestic work for white families.</image:caption>

<image:title>Ho-Op Blog - Thotty Thursday: Class Struggle and Sex Work</image:title>
<image:caption>Slide 9 text: A Brief (Sexual) Labor History. After slavery (outside of prisons) was abolished in the U.S., sex work became a way for some Black women to achieve financial stability and economic self-reliance while resisting the white owning classes’ attempts to control their sexuality. Many Black and Brown queer/trans folks also turned to sex work for this and other reasons, including: Difficulty finding jobs in a mainstream labor market that was (and is) discriminatory and hostile toward racialized, queer, and trans bodies. Experiencing homelessness/housing instability. Suffering neglect or rejection from natal family. Seeking gender validation (especially trans women/femmes). Looking for community support. Some trans sex workers use(d) their income to support other trans people in their community. Trans sex workers and activists Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson founded Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) in 1970 to shelter unhoused trans youth. Black sex-working women and femmes—both trans and cis—have given a lot of labor to the struggle for sex workers’ rights. (See our “Black Sex Worker Movement Mothers” post to learn more!)</image:caption>

<image:title>Ho-Op Blog - Thotty Thursday: Class Struggle and Sex Work</image:title>
<image:caption>Slide 10 text: Sex worker organizing & community care is labor too! Because sex workers are excluded from most forms of state and charitable assistance, sex worker communities often serve as a “DIY safety net” of mutual support to meet workers’ survival needs, such as: Safe housing. Accessing healthcare resources. Gender-affirming care resources. Emotional support. Crisis childcare. Bail money. Occupational safety gear (condoms, self-defense items). Clothes (including work “uniforms”). Sex worker organizing is an opportunity for workers to: 1. Collectively affirm the value and dignity of our lives and our labor. 2. Uplift and protect each other with shared knowledge, perspective, and resources. 3. Organize to transform the legal, social, and cultural conditions that perpetuate our oppression. Sex workers need labor solidarity from workers in other industries—not “rescuing,” pity, or stigma. We are stronger when we organize together!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Image text: Sex Work vs. Sex Trafficking: Anti-prostitution laws are often conflated with or framed as attempts to prevent sex trafficking. HOWEVER: Laws against human trafficking still apply when sex work is decriminalized. There is inconclusive data on whether the decriminalization of sex work directly impacts the effectiveness of sex trafficking laws. Missouri laws against "promoting" and "patronizing prostitution" fail to distinguish between sex work and sex trafficking by grouping together both voluntary and coerced participation in the sex trades under the same statutes.</image:caption>

Due to the current consolidation of Republicans decision-making power and a lack of public education around sex work in the legislature, we are likely years away from passing statewide legislation that shifts the conditions of sex workers in any meaningful way.” State of the Hustle, 2020, page 9. We have still made progress. In 2022, one of our allies, Rep. Rasheen Aldridge, introduced a bill to decriminalize prostitution into the MO legislature. It died in committee ... <image:caption>Image text: Founded in 2018, Neurodiversity Celebration Week is "a worldwide initiative that aims to transform how neurodivergent individuals are perceived and supported by creating more inclusive and equitable cultures that celebrate differences and empower every individual." Quote: "I believe that neurological differences, such as autism, dyslexia and dyspraxia are natural variations in the human brain. l am trying to flip the narrative so that society stops viewing US as defective and starts to embrace and harness our many strengths and talents." <image:caption>Image text: Terms to know. Neurodivergent: Having a brain that functions differently from what is considered "normal." Neurotypical: Having a brain that functions in ways that are considered "normal." Neurotype: How a person's brain works, including any diagnosable mental or neurological conditions. Neurodiversity: The natural diversity of human neurotypes (which includes both neurodivergent and neurotypical people!)</image:caption>

<image:caption>Image text: Why do some neurodivergent people choose sex work? Many traits/symptoms associated with neurodivergence can make traditional jobs less accessible to neurodivergent people. These include: Insomnia and differences in chronotype. Differences in sensory integration. Differences in attention regulation. Difficulty responding to change. Mental fatigue. Overstimulation. For some neurodivergent people, sex work may provide a more accessible option.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Image text: Potential benefits of sex work for (some) neurodivergent adults: Flexibility with scheduling! The opportunity to adjust working hours when mental/chronic illness symptoms flare up. Many neurodivergent workers are able to meet their financial needs with fewer hours of sexual labor than other forms of (accessible) labor. This can help prevent physical and mental burnout.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Image text: Problems neurodivergent sex workers face: Lack of access to supportive and respectful mental health care. May be undiagnosed or misdiagnosed due to stereotypes (of sex workers, BIPOC, women, etc.). Compounded stigma. Lack of access to information that could help them understand their own neurotype and how to advocate for their needs.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Image text: Ways to support neurodivergent sex workers: Destigmatize neurodivergence along with destigmatizing sex work. Respect neurodivergent adults' sexual agency. Advocate for neurodiversity-affirming, sex-worker-affirming mental health services. Advocate for accessible, neurodiversity-friendly workplaces and job applications/interviews to give neurodivergent people more employment options. Advocate for non-stigmatizing research on sex work and neurodivergence that respects neurodivergent sex workers as experts on their own experiences. <image:title>Events - Thotty Thursday: Abort Fascism part II</image:title>
<image:caption>It is notable that Justice Samuel Alito’s draft majority opinion in the Dobbs decision argues against a general right to autonomy due to fears that it would protect “illicit drug use” and “prostitution”: “These attempts to justify abortion through appeals to a broader right to autonomy and to define one’s ‘concept of existence’ prove too much. Casey, 505 U.S., at 851. Those criteria, at a high level of generality, could license fundamental rights to illicit drug use, prostitution, and the like.” Alito challenges the legitimacy of many rights that he says are not “rooted in the Nation’s history and tradition,” including: abortion, interracial marriage, contraception, the right to not be nonconsensually sterilized, the right to reside with relatives, the right to make decisions about your children’s education, the “right to engage in consensual” and private “same-sex intimacy,” and the right to same-sex marriage.</image:caption>

<image:title>Events - Thotty Thursday: Abort Fascism part II - Restricting sex workers’ and trans folks’ bodily autonomy and freedom of expression serves the fascist playbook:</image:title>
<image:caption>1. Controlling who gets to exist in public spaces and who gets to have a voice in public conversations. 2. Enforcing a rigid social order based on who fascists deem “valuable” vs. who they deem “disposable.” Criminalizing sex workers and trans people for exercising their autonomy sets precedent for criminalizing anyone’s bodily autonomy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Events - Thotty Thursday</image:title>
<image:caption>Let’s talk about decriminalization vs. legalization.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/621d9139ef4cad26f0393f9a/1661527445879-CT1RV1RE08L6HJDMPL0D/2.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Events - Thotty Thursday</image:title>
<image:caption>So what do these terms mean? Legalization and decriminalization are both proposed solutions to the criminalization of sex work. There are important differences between legalization and decriminalization. But first, let's talk about how the criminalization of sex work is harming sex workers.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/621d9139ef4cad26f0393f9a/1661527446288-DFUO9IFY2QZ3U8CW4V9Y/3.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Events - Thotty Thursday</image:title>
<image:caption>Problems with criminalization: Sex workers who go to the police after being physically or sexually assaulted could be charged as a criminal for doing illegal sex work. This makes sex workers more vulnerable to violence from attackers who see sex workers as easy targets (since they are less likely to go to the police). Criminalization also forces sex workers to carry fewer condoms (which can be used as evidence of illegal work if the worker is ever arrested). This increases their risk of STls and unwanted pregnancies.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/621d9139ef4cad26f0393f9a/1661527446401-O52TPXIULO49RAY5Q11K/4.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Events - Thotty Thursday</image:title>
<image:caption>Criminalization exposes sex workers to abuse and exploitation by law enforcement. Where sex work is criminalized, police officers harass sex workers, extort bribes from them, physically and verbally abuse them, or even rape/coerce sex from them. This can force sex workers to work in unsafe locations to avoid the police. Source: Human Rights Watch</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/621d9139ef4cad26f0393f9a/1661527446726-WY69RMGW5JW1O69FJLLF/5.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Events - Thotty Thursday</image:title>
<image:caption>Legalization vs. decriminalization: what's the difference? DECRIMINALIZATION: The removal or absence of criminal laws and other laws that oppress sex workers. LEGALIZATION: The introduction of laws that aim to control sex work by imposing state regulation. Legalization does not fully decriminalize sex work.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/621d9139ef4cad26f0393f9a/1661527447036-122DB7CPCD8CLBVWHOP3/6.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Events - Thotty Thursday</image:title>
<image:caption>What does legalization look like? In practice, legalization can mean: Restricting how, when and where sex work happens. Creating a tier of illegal/non-compliant workers. Giving police and other state authorities excessive enforcement powers. This will not end legal discrimination or stigma against sex workers. Note: Some sex worker groups use the word "legalization" to advocate labor and industry standards that legally recognize sex work as work, while opposing laws and policies that restrict or control sex work. That is different.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/621d9139ef4cad26f0393f9a/1661527447244-J8U6DSRGT2D26SQBSJGH/7.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Events - Thotty Thursday</image:title>
<image:caption>What does decriminalization look like? Decriminalization should include: Immediately stopping all arrests/raids of sex workers and clients. Revoking all punitive laws surrounding sex work. Immediately redirecting all county and state police funds for prostitution arrests into harm reduction programs that have sex worker input and oversight. Releasing all sex workers who have been incarcerated for prostitution or for defending themselves against assault.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/621d9139ef4cad26f0393f9a/1661527447564-IQSUMJZCJAIT6XOS95S5/8.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Events - Thotty Thursday</image:title>
<image:caption>Decriminalization should include: Decoupling sex work from labor trafficking in policy-based and nuanced ways. Expanding cash assistance, housing assistance, and visa/asylum assistance to all trafficking survivors, without forcing them to use victimizing language in order to access these services. Including "sex worker" as protected category to combat discrimination public services (healthcare, affordable housing programs, recourse to challenge police violence, etc.). Decriminalization is essential for ending sex work stigma.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/621d9139ef4cad26f0393f9a/1661527447861-CGG2VWZQIJZFJTX1ORO1/9.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Events - Thotty Thursday</image:title>
<image:caption>What would decriminalization do for sex workers? Decriminalizing sex work would maximize sex workers' legal protections and their ability to exercise key human rights. Decriminalization is a cultural shift as well as a policy shift. By demanding decriminalization and anti-carceral harm reduction tactics, we are directly challenging the whorephobia of the state and society. This is how we organize for sex workers' power.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Events - Thotty Thursday</image:title>
<image:caption>DECRIMINALIZE SEX WORK NOW. Why are sex workers still being criminalized for what they choose to do with their bodies? A government shouldn't be dictating the terms for consensual sexual relations between adults, including those that involve monetary exchange. Our bodies belong to us, not to the state. #DecrimNow See sources link for more info!</image:caption>

<image:title>Events - Thotty Thursday! - Image description:</image:title>
<image:caption>Why does it matter? The EARN IT Act will allow states to enforce their own laws around CSAM and create more stringent standards for legal liability. This greatly undermines the protections provided to internet platforms in Section 230. This will encourage internet platforms to proactively search through content and create backdoors to monitor content. It may also pressure internet platforms to eliminate privacy protections, such as end-to-end encryption, altogether.</image:caption>
</image:image>
<image:image>
<image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/621d9139ef4cad26f0393f9a/39b4f641-8828-44d6-bb24-13c36261c8b2/5.png</image:loc>
<image:title>Events - Thotty Thursday! - Image description:</image:title>
<image:caption>But what about the children? CSAM is already ILLEGAL without the EARN It Act. This new policy is not needed. The EARN IT Act makes sex workers, LGBTQI+, and people of color unsafe. Sex workers would no longer have spaces where we can safely contact clients, advertise our services or share information. The EARN It Act does nothing to actually help child victims of sexual exploitation. It does not provide services to survivors or address the underlying factors that cause CSAM.</image:caption>

<image:title>Events - Thotty Thursday! - Image description:</image:title>
<image:caption>Why should we care? The effect of EARN IT could be similar to those made by earlier policies made and passed to “protect” against sex trafficking. SESTA/FOSTA (2018) pressured digital platforms to remove any content that could be construed as ‘sexual’ from their platform. Its impact? Sex workers, sex educators, harm reduction specialists, and LGBTQI+ groups were removed en masse from multiple internet platforms. The EARN IT Act threatens to similarly harm our communities, encouraging de-platforming, censorship, and ending privacy protections.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Not only will the overturning of Roe v. Wade effect anyone with a uterus, it will have doubly negative effects on sex workers. Sex workers’ bodily autonomy and access to healthcare are already undermined by laws that criminalize erotic labor.</image:caption>

<image:title>Events - Thotty Thursday! - How else does it affect sex workers?</image:title>
<image:caption>Contraceptives are not 100% effective and there’s always a possibility of pregnancy due to this type of work. Sex workers with a uterus may have to carry on with a pregnancy even if it is unwanted. Sex workers already struggle with having access to healthcare and having control with their own bodily autonomy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Events - Thotty Thursday! - So what’s the bottom line for sex workers?</image:title>
<image:caption>Nobody should be forced to carry a pregnancy, and what we do with our bodies should not be dictated by the Supreme Court.</image:caption>

<image:title>Events - Thotty Thursday! - How else could sex workers be impacted?</image:title>
<image:caption>Sex workers are vulnerable to sexual harassment and violence in the workplace. If sexual violence does occur, we should not be forced to carry the perpetrator’s baby. If sexual violence results in pregnancy, the law of the land should not perpetuate the violence via forced birth, nor criminalize the victim.</image:caption>

<image:title>Events - Thotty Thursday!</image:title>
