What do you know about SESTA/FOSTA?
Let's unpack by explaining what each law stands for: SESTA: 'Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act.' FOSTA: 'Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act.' If you like using dating sites, social sites, or porn sites, this is something you should know about!
2018: The FOSTA/SESTA package bill made it illegal for online platforms to knowingly support sex trafficking.
Advocates of the new law were hopeful that it would protect would-be victims of sex trafficking by deterring and/or preventing the promotion of sexual services by online platforms ... but SESTA/FOSTA actually makes sex workers less safe.
Sex workers use online platforms to attract clients, sell services and negotiate rates. FOSTA/SESTA makes it more difficult for workers to protect and take care of themselves.
Many sex workers rely on internet-based interactions to share helpful safety information with their client. FOSTA/SESTA makes it more difficult for sex workers to control this interaction. This leads to sex workers putting themselves at more risk.
Safety is a priority for sex workers! Online platforms gave sex workers the space to have more autonomy over their work, and offered tools so they could create a blacklist of dangerous clients.
Websites helped sex workers with similar interests or problems build online community together. FOSTA/SESTA is taking that safety net AWAY for sex workers, forcing them to put themselves in more dangerous situations.
